Say what? I know, you’d expect me to say “yes of course”, here I am trying to sell you a communication workshop. And we’re well into the 21st century, so everyone already knows how important communication is, even if we still have struggles and need guidance and practice. And I agree of course, I took my first communication course in the 80’s, and I’ve been counseling couples for decades. So what do I mean?

What I’m trying to say is: excellent communication knowledge and skills are absolutely necessary ~ but not sufficient. You’re not getting anywhere without them, but they’ll only get you so far when things get tough. We can learn all the right moves from Non-Violent Communication (and let’s all praise and kiss the lotus feet of Marshall Rosenberg!), but if that’s all we’ve got we may still come up short. Some of us even know folks who go through the motions of that, but we still feel something is missing there.

We can talk about this a number of ways, but a simple word is connection. And we can only connect with others effectively to the extent that we’re in self-connection, which is primary. It’s our presence, in our being, in our heart, in our care, and in a spirit of openness, that creates the space for true communication which is satisfying every time. Raising communication to the level of communion. That brings more intimacy to all our communications in life, especially in our most important relationships with beloveds, in business, and with friends and community ~ which supports our own feeling of relatedness and connection at every level.

And that can be a tall order, when there’s a lot at stake, and one or both people are triggered, or not really feeling safe. That’s a skill too, and there’s more to understand and get in touch with there than most communication courses address. HOW exactly do we do that?
